Youth Engagement Strategy
Creating Positive Change
A project born from a bequest designated to support youth self esteem, the Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) community development project, initiated by the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan Similkameen involved a consultation with service providers and youth regarding the needs of young people in Penticton. As a result of the report, PDCRS piloted a youth outreach worker position during the summer of 2014 and are now providing a Youth Engagement Worker who acts as a resource, mentor and counsellor to support the needs of youth.
The YES project is committed to creating positive change for Penticton youth by working side-by-side with young people who want to make a difference.
Youth are at the heart of the project and are full engaged in driving the three pillars:
- Public Awareness (#AVoice4Once)
- Free and Fun Youth Activities
- A Youth Centre in Penticton
The Youth Engagement Worker (YEW) works flexible hours and is available for youth when and where they need support. The YEW connects with young people in many different ways with the goal of the making youth feel safe and comfortable to ask for assistance when they need it. The YEW visits school regularly, is available by cell phone via text and voice calls and will travel to a common meeting place to support young people.
